Cheap ebooks

There are a lot of inexpensive ebooks out there. Some are classics, some are crap. Anybody can self publish a book with a little effort but should they?

There are websites that will guide you to these low priced books, Book Gorilla and Book Lending to name a few. There are some established authors on their lists that will sell older books at a reduced price, sometimes only for a day. You can find some bargains but it takes time and you’ll probably end up reading books that only mildly interest you. Most of these inexpensive books are by first time authors that couldn’t find a publisher and there’s a reason for that. The writing is amateur and the editing poor or nonexistent.

Classic works by well known authors like Jane Austen or Edgar Allan Poe are being marketed in multiple formats as ebooks. Do I really need to have all my favorite books on my reader just because that only cost $0.99? I’ve decided “No” for the most part. If I want to reread an old classic I’ll buy it then. The quality of the layout varies on these so if thee’s a sample, look at it. Of course, it’s good to have a few old favorites loaded on your reader for those airport layovers or doctors’ waiting rooms.

You may discover new favorite authors by buying these inexpensive books, but I admit that I’m a diehard review reader and if a respected source like the New York Times recommends it I’m more likely to read it than  trusting a few Amazon reviews that were probably written by the author’s friends.

Happy reading!

I love books, my Kindle and my Kindle Fire.

I’ve always been addicted to reading. My mother used to kick me out of the house to go play and I’d just bring my book out to the picnic table. I still feel naked without a book of some sort in my bag. I want that chance to escape into another world at any moment. Now we have so many choices of ways to read.

I read full books on the tiny screen of my iPhone before I got my Kindles and if necessary I still will read from my phone.

My first Kindle, the original Kindle, was not a favorite but I appreciated being able to carry multiple books around with me. It seemed kind of low tech and clunky and we never really bonded. It eventually died.

It was replaced with a Kindle Touch. That is more sleek and sexy and since I make a point of carrying the smallest bag possible, it fit my lifestyle. I currently have 140 books on it. I haven’t read them all but they are there in case I’m stranded at a bus stop or doctor’s appointment. I bought a rubbery cover for it so it isn’t so slippery. It makes the Kindle feel secure in my hands. Because of its size, it goes with me almost everywhere.

Then along came my Kindle Fire. It was kind of a gift. My husband bought it for himself and decided it didn’t really meet his needs. Plus I was always borrowing it to watch Amazon Prime movies.

I like the Fire for its apps and internet capability. I use it to view books I’m publishing on KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) to make sure the formatting looks right on different devices. Also, it makes PDF documents easier to scroll though than trying to read them on a laptop. It makes reading magazines on a plane much easier. No more elbowing the passenger next to you while turning the page.

So now when I leave the house, I have to decide whether to take the Touch or the Fire. If I have room, I sometimes take both. If I’m just going to be reading and in the sun, I take the Touch. The glare on the Fire makes it difficult to use outside. The Fire has become my laptop replacement if I might need to look something up on the internet.  It’s certainly not a replacement for my MacBook but it’s a step up from my phone. I kinda feel if you are going to use an iPad you might as well use a laptop. Anyway, that’s another conversation.

I still love the feel of a good hardcover book. It’s now become a special treat. There’s nothing like a good novel taken from the library shelves and brought home to savor with a good cup of tea. The smell and weight of it is comforting. Textbooks and nonfiction sometimes work better for me in paper as well. Flipping to a certain page to get the information you need quickly is easier for me when I can actually see the pages.

So, there you have it. I love books in any shape and form.

Summer garden fun.

So, my little balcony garden is in full mid-summer bloom. There are loads of green tomatoes just waiting for the right weather to turn red. Some are a random heirloom variety, so I don’t even know what color to expect from them. Due to some building maintenance, the Earthbox they are in had to be moved for a few days and a few stems were broken, but everything is back to normal now. I’ve been using the railing instead of staking so they were flopped over, but they seem to have recovered.

The strawberries have sent shoots everywhere and are producing about a handful of berries a week. The herbs have provided some tasty pesto and mojitos. I must admit the flowers have been somewhat neglected as they aren’t my focus but they have new flowers.

So far so good.

Less than 100 days to go!

The tickets are purchased, items are being sold, boxes are being packed. It’s really happening. We are moving to Oahu, cat and all.

Much research went into figuring out the cat move. If it wasn’t for her, we’d probably be there by now.

Shasta

She’s now passed her rabies test and we are in the 120 day wait period. Next step is a health certificate and tick repellent applied by vet a few before she flies. Her paperwork must be sent by snail mail to be there when she arrives.

Alaska Air is the only carrier that allows cats in the cabin to Hawaii. For a 21 year old cat, it seems like a wise choice. Now I just have to pick out an airline approved cat carrier. There are some fancy options but it’s just one flight so I think I’m going with the Sherpa original deluxe carrier.

So, now the project is to sell and give away more things including cars, find a place to live and ALOHA.

Who knew? I guess I’m a beach girl.

I’ve always been more attracted to mountains than beaches but over the past few years I’ve grown to become a beach girl. I’m never going to be that girl in the bikini hang in out in the sand. That’s not for me but having visited Greek, Bahamian, and Hawaiian beaches, I am now a water lover.

Juanita Beach

My first real impressions of the beach were in college, going to the Jersey shore. I suppose there were visits to Long Island as a kid, but those were brief and unmemorable. So, sorry, Jersey people, but those beaches did not make a favorable impression. I did want to learn how to surf back then, but it didn’t seem like people actually went in the water much. It was all about the tan. Not my thing.

So, having taken a few more pleasant beach vacations, my opinion had changed by the time we bought a condo on Lake Washington. I spent many hours with my headphones and Kindle, hanging out with the ducks and dogs at the beach. It amazed me that people went in the water since it’s cold. It was a special treat whenever the eagles or herons were around. And I had no idea salmon could jump so high.

Mukilteo Lighthouse Park

The best time was winter and spring when it was windy enough for kite surfing. I’d get out on the pier and watch them every chance I got. I could see them from the condo window but it was much more fun to have the wind splashing over me on the pier as these wetsuit clad athletes sped toward the pier, only turning at the last minute.

Now I’m living away from the water as I prepare to move to Oahu, Hawaii. I have to travel seven miles to get to a decent beach so it’s no longer a daily habit.

So, now I’m ready to see what fun Hawaii has to offer.

Making live easier with container gardening

You don’t have to live in the country or suburbs to have a productive garden. If you are used to growing plants in the ground or not having a garden at all, there could be a bit of a learning curve, but with a little planning you can have a beautiful and bountiful patio or balcony.

These pots could be used for tomatoes, cucumbers, lemon trees. Use your imagination. To save money and your back, fill the bottom with a shelf or styrofoam.

Animals

Ole and I 011

There are many horse therapy facilities that teach riders to communicate with the horses. People with disabilities, physical handicaps or emotional problems can be assisted to reconnect with their physical and emotional selves.

Cats are used in hospitals and retirement homes to provide companionship and comfort.

I stumbled back into copyediting almost accidentally but I find it to be lots of fun. I know it’s not most people’s cup of tea, but it really sucks me in.

Eat healthy, live healthy.

Having MS has made me more conscious of that I eat and drink. I’m not saying I’ve discovered all the answers or have the perfect diet. I cheat, but I’ve learned that usually the consequences are not worth the few minutes of joy while eating  ice cream.

I’ve been cleaning out closets and I came across a cookbook I had made in grade school to save all the recipes my mother liked me to cook. Since she didn’t like to cook and I did, I’d make the recipes she liked. Good thing I didn’t usually eat most of the foods I made because they were pretty awful. These ‘recipes’ used box cake mixes, jello, Bisquick, powdered whip cream mix, canned fruit…
